How To Look After Your Skin During Winter

For many people, the cold clear days of winter bring more than just a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring uncomfortable dryness to the skin. You may have found a moisturiser that works just fine in spring and summer, but as weather conditions change, so should your skin care routine. Here are some tips to help you to beat the harsh dryness winter can bring to your skin:

  • Find a facial moisturiser that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin to retain more moisture. Many night creams are oil-based so this can be a good place to start. But choose your oils with care because not all oils are appropriate for the face. Instead, look for nonclogging light oils, like grapeseed oil.
  • Body scrubs & facial exfoliants are a must during the winter season. Not only are they great for removing the layers of dead skin our body builds up, but it also preps your skin to allow it to absorb the moisturiser faster & deeper. Try to use a scrub once to twice a week & definitely apply moisturiser after doing so.
  • Finding your hands are also feeling the bite of winter dryness? The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. To protect your hands from the harsh winter weather, wear gloves when you go outside & apply moisturiser regularly.
  • Apply moisturiser to the skin after showering & before going to bed. Your skin will benefit greatly from doing these two. When we shower we lose natural oils from the hot water & our skin tends to dry out. So moisturising after a shower will replace those lost oils & will help keep your skin hydrated. When we moisturise before going to bed it will benefit your skin in a massive way. As we sleep our body is more relaxed & can allow the skin to absorb the moisturiser better.
  • If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners, all of which can strip vital oil from your skin. Instead, find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser, a toner with no alcohol, and masks that are deeply hydrating rather than clay-based, which tends to draw moisture out of the face.
